Meetings in Lisboa

Right before Christmas I visited Lisbon to attend a conference and a workshop held at the Instituto Superior Técnico. It was a great opportunity to come back to Portugal after almost one year and meet a lot of friends and colleagues there.

Good memories climbing the hill to IST

a) GR 100 Years in Lisbon [18-19 December 2015]

To celebrate the centenary of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity we have organized an international conference in Lisbon. Overall, I think it was a great success, with 100+ participants, outstanding speakers, various sessions (including history of General Relativity and various accounts on the first experimental tests of this theory) and very interesting posters. The conference dinner took place at "Mesa de Frades", a typical Fado House in Alfama.

b) VIII Black Hole Workshop [21-22 December 2015]

The conference was followed by the eighth edition of the Black Hole Workshop. This event started 8 years ago with the aim of gathering Portuguese scientists working abroad and who would come back to Portugal for Christmas. However, it has almost immediately grown and it is now one of the major workshops on black holes in Europe. The  Black Holes Workshops  gather researchers working on mathematical and physical problems of gravitation, both in its classical and quantum aspects, as well as on superstrings, cosmology and astrophysics, and stimulate the interaction between them. This year, the workshop was attended by ~90 participants and 30+ speakers.
